The Washington Elderly Handicapped Transportation Service is operated by the United Planning Organization.  UPO is located at 941 North Capitol Street, NW Washington, D.C. 20002.

No fees are charged for this service.  However, due to federal regulations relating to the Older Americans Act of 1965 as amended in 1984, Public Law 100-175 permits the solicitation of voluntary contributions from participants.  No senior citizen is denied service because of an inability to contribute.

The application process is quite simple.  Each client is asked a series of questions.  These questions will determine the transportation services needed as well as determining what additional services may be provided to the senior citizen via the UPO city-wide service network.

WEHTS is a curb-to-curb service.  If the senior citizen needs additional assistance, the lead agency should be advised of that fact.   They will make the additional adjstments where possible.  All wheelchair clients MUST have an escort.  All persons with physical limitations that prevent them from getting around alone must also have an escort.

WEHTS operates Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 6:30 PM.  The service is closed all holidays that are honored by the District of Columbia Government.
